4. Alexander2 McKinlay (Alexander1) was born on 8 January 1807 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 He married Margaret Yuill, daughter of James Yuill and Mary Lamb, on 22 February 1835 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.4,1,2 He died on 11 September 1870 in 194 West Nile Street, Glasgow, Scotland, at age 63.5,1,2

He had a varied worklife, including being a stock exhange janitor and a powerloom dressor journeyman.5,2,6

Margaret Yuill was born circa 1812 in Carmyle, Scotland.1 She died on 16 June 1888 in Glasgow, Scotland.5,1,6 She lived in 1881 in 60 Inglefield Street, Govan, Scotland.7

Children of Alexander2 McKinlay and Margaret Yuill were as follows:

  • 7 i. Mary3 McKinlay was born circa 1836 in Glasgow, Scotland.

  • 8 ii. Alexander McKinlay was born circa 1838 in Glasgow, Scotland.7,8,9 He died on 15 September 1904 in 51 Glasgow Road, Clydebank, Scotland.10

At some point in his youth (it is presumed), he traveled to Australia to participate in the gold rush fever that swept New South Wales after the discovery of gold nuggets in 1851 by Edward Hargreaves. Alexander would have been only 13 years old when gold was first discovered, so we can assume that his trip was some years later. Gold mining continued for most of the century, but the major action in the Australian goldfields, when large nuggets were extracted, occurred by 1861, when Alexander would have been 23.

From his Australia mining experience, Alexander is known to have passed on a large gold nugget to each of his five McKinlay nephews. From all accounts, this represented a very successful gold mining experience, since most miners spent all of their gold on food, supplies, and services while still in the goldfields. The cost of these goods generally increased when more gold was found in a given region ... the end result being that product and service suppliers were the big winners in the goldfields.

Two of the nuggets passed onto Alexander's nephews are still accounted for, and have remained with McKinlay surnamed sons down through the family.11,12

During the 1881 census, he lived at 60 Inglefield Street, Govan, Scotland.7 At his death in 1904, he was referred to as a retired tobacconist.10
