Cecelia Scott Reid4 McKinlay (James3, Alexander2, Alexander1) was born on 8 July 1879 in Hutchesontown, Lanarkshire, Scotland.7,1,23 She married John William McNeill, son of Hugh McNeill and Ann Pearson, on 14 October 1904 in Clydebank, Scotland.19,18 She died on 28 March 1957 in Vancouver, B.C., at age 77.19,24,23,25 She was buried on 30 March 1957 in Ocean View Burial Park, Burnaby, B.C.23,25

John William McNeill was born on 19 July 1879 in Greenock, Scotland.18,27 He died on 14 September 1940 in West Vancouver, B.C., at age 61.23,27,29 He was buried on 18 September 1940 in Ocean View Cemetery, Burnaby, B.C.27 He was a journeyman ship plater in 1904 in Clydebank, Scotland.18  In 1940, they lived at 1733 Duchess Avenue, West Vancouver, B.C.29,27

Cecelia Scott Reid4 McKinlay and John William McNeill had one daughter.

13. Alexander4 McKinlay (James3, Alexander2, Alexander1) was born on 1 December 1880 in Glasgow, Scotland.7,1,28 He married Jane Smith McKirdy, daughter of Archibald McGregor Young and Helen McKirdy, on 3 January 1906 in Town Hall, Clydebank, Scotland.1,17 He died on 1 July 1950 in Calgary, Alberta, at age 69.33,1,28 He was buried on 5 July 1950 in Burnsland Cemetery, Calgary, Alberta.28,34,35

Given a gold nugget by his uncle, Alexander McKinlay, who obtained it while gold mining in Australia. Alexander had the nugget made into a stag's head stick pin, and is known to have passed it onto his son, Jim. The current whereabouts of the nugget is unknown.11,36 He was employed as a tailor by the C.P.R. for 30 years in Calgary, Alberta.28

mckirdy.JPG (64519 bytes)Jane Smith McKirdy was born on 7 January 1883 in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 She died on 29 November 1938 in Calgary, Alberta, at age 55.19,1,37 She was buried on 1 December 1938 in Burnsland Cemetery, Calgary, Alberta.34,35 She was a machinist in 1906 in Clydebank, Scotland.17

  • 20 i. Elizabeth Smith5 McKinlay was born on 12 January 1907 in Clydebank, Dumbarton, Scotland.1,38 She married Carl Bloom in 1931.26 She died on 14 October 1989 in Calgary, Alberta, at age 82.1,38 She was buried on 17 October 1989 in Queen's Park Cemetery, Calgary, Alberta.39,38

    She was ill with diabetes.26 She lived in July 1950 in Calgary, Alberta.28 The photo to the right shows Carl and Bessie (as she was known) sitting down at a celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary in June 1981.

  • 21 ii. Margaret Taylor McKinlay was born on 21 September 1908 in Clydebank, Dumbarton, Scotland.1 She died on 20 September 1921 in Calgary, Alberta, at age 12.26,1,40 She was buried on 22 September 1921 in Union Cemetery, Calgary, Alberta.40

     

  • 22 iii. James MacKinlay was born on 27 April 1911 in Clydebank, Dumbarton, 2640 - James MacKinlay.JPG (78091 bytes)Scotland.1 He married Ellen Annetta McPhee, daughter of Albert Leslie McPhee and Ellevera Amelia Frank, on 1 September 1939 in The Church of Latter Day Saints, Calgary, Alberta.1,41 He died on 17 May 1984 in Langley, B.C., at age 73.1,42

    He was diabetic.26 He lived between 1913 and 1948 in Calgary, Alberta.42 He was the Fleet Sales Manager for Chrysler Canada when he retired in 1966 in Calgary, Alberta.42

     

  • 23 iv. John McKirdy McKinlay was born on 18 May 1913 in Calgary, Alberta.26,1 He married Annie Ray McTavish on 14 April.43 He died on 8 October 1945 in Rockyford, Alberta, at age 32.26,1,43

    He was also known as John #3, being the third grandson of James McKinlay and0869 - John McKirdy McKinlay & Annie jpg.JPG (52783 bytes) Margaret Taylor given the name of John McKinlay, all within a 5 month period.26 A cousin of John recalled the events surrounding his death as follows: "John had gone hunting with friends in the Red Deer area in Alberta, but didn't feel very good so he stayed in the car. When the fellows returned, he was doubled over with pain. They took him to a doctor, and he died. His wife at home spoke to their own doctor and he said there wasn't anything anybody could have done for him. So he was 32, and left a baby in arms."26

14. James Taylor4 McKinlay (James3, Alexander2, Alexander1) was born on 31 March 1882 in Hutchesontown, Lanarkshire, Scotland.13,44,45 He married Caroline Pollock Mulholland Seright, daughter of John S. Seright and Sarah Townsend, on 13 March 1908 in Town Hall, Clydebank, County of Dumbarton, Scotland.15 He died on 31 December 1962 in Nelson, B.C, at age 80.46,44,47,45 He was buried on 3 January 1963 in Masonic Plot, Nelson Memorial Park, Nelson, B.C.44,45

Given a gold nugget by his uncle, Alexander McKinlay, who obtained it while gold mining in Australia. James had it made into a stag's head on a stick pin, representative of the clan symbol. The stag's head measures approximately 3/4 of an inch in diameter. The pin was passed onto a son.11 

He was an electric craneman and a shipper receiver during his career. He worked for Singer Sewing Machine Co. at Clydebank in the early 1900's, and came to Canada in 1908 after boat.JPG (54957 bytes)his marriage to Caroline. They settled in Calgary, with James first working for the Canadian Pacific Railway (or perhaps Northern Electric), then for Canadian General Electric for 22 years as a shipper receiver until retirement in August 1947. Following retirement, he and Caroline moved to Nelson. He reached 50 years as a masonic member in 1957 and was a life member of St. John's Masonic Lodge in Delmuir, Scotland. He was also a charter member of Granite Lodge #154 in Nelson. As a member of Nelson City Band, James played the clarinet. While he lived in Scotland, he played with the Glasgow Highlanders band, and in Calgary, played with several bands, including Shaine, Elks, and the Calgary Regiment.47  He retired on 31 August 1947 in Calgary, Alberta.48

Caroline Pollock Mulholland Seright was born on 10 May 1885 in Blairdardie, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.49,50,51,3,52 She died on 3 September 1969 in Nelson, B.C., at age 84.53,50,54,52 She was buried on 5 September 1969 in Masonic Plot, Nelson Memorial Park, Nelson, B.C.50,52 She was a machinist in March 1908, and lived at 66 Glasgow Road, Clydebank, Scotland.15 She emigrated in March 1908 from Glasgow, Scotland.48

James Taylor4 McKinlay and Caroline Pollock Mulholland Seright had a daughter and three sons, all born in Calgary, Alberta.

16. John Reid J.4 McKinlay (James3, Alexander2, Alexander1) was born on 17 December 1885 in Clydebank, Scotland.1 He married Robina Dewar, daughter of William Middleton Dewar and Marjory McIntosh.19 He died on 24 August 1986 in Richmond, B.C. at the age of 100.19,1,64

lattice.JPG (58035 bytes)Photo taken circa 1920 with his mother in North Vancouver, B.C. John lived with his daughter and son-in-law in his later years. He was a soldier during WWI, having received a shrapnel injury that left him with one leg paralyzed.65

Robina Dewar was born on 3 July 1896 in Glasgow, Scotland.67,68 She died of atherosclerotic heart disease on 16 December 1977 in Richmond, B.C., at age 81.67 She was cremated following a service on 20 December 1977 in Victoria Memorial Park, Surrey, B.C.67 She was active in musical circles, and had been a choir member of St. Giles United Church and Chown United Church.67

John Reid J.4 McKinlay and Robina Dewar has a son and a daughter.

17. Fraser Yuille4 McKinlay (James3, Alexander2, Alexander1) was born on 16 Aprilfraser.JPG (25069 bytes) 1888 in Clydebank, Scotland.66,1,70 He married Violet Lonie Alexander, daughter of John Alexander and Annie Lindsay, on 12 June 1912 in East Calgary Presbyterian Church, Calgary, Alberta.66,19 He died on 23 June 1977 in Calgary, Alberta, at age 89.66,70 He was buried on 27 June 1977 in Memorial View Memorial Gardens, Calgary, Alberta.66,70

He was a butcher, having trained in Scotland, and owned a butcher shop in Calgary for 15 years.66,19 Given a gold nugget by his uncle, Alexander McKinlay, who obtained it while gold mining in Australia. Fraser, like his other four brothers, had the nugget made into a stag's head stick pin. He passed it down to his son, John A. McKinlay.11,36 He emigrated in 1910 from Scotland and settled in Calgary, where he lived until his death in 1977.19,66,28

Violet Lonie Alexander was born on 28 April 1888 in Alexandria, Scotland.71,72,73,74 She died on 21 December 1976 in Calgary, Alberta, at age 88.66,71,73 She was buried on 28 December 1976 in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Calgary, Alberta.71,73 She immigrated in 1912 to Calgary, Alberta.19,73

Children of Fraser Yuille4 McKinlay and Violet Lonie Alexander both born in Calgary, Alberta, were as follows:

  • 30 i. John Alexander5 McKinlay was born on 15 May 1913.75,19 He died on 29 December 1999 in Agape Manor Hospice, Calgary, Alberta, at age 86.76 He was buried on 3 January 2000 in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Calgary, Alberta.76

    He was also known as John #2, being the second grandson of James McKinlay and Margaret Taylor given the name of John McKinlay, all within a 5 month period.26 He was the Secretary/Treasurer for a conglomerate of oil companies and stockyards for over 30 years. During World War II, he receive a temporary discharge from the Canadian Air Force (Quebec base) to return to Calgary to drill oil wells to be used in case of further invasion of Europe. This was a joint Canadian-American project, and as it turned out, the oil wasn't required.19 He retired in September 1973 from Gulf Canada Resources Ltd, Calgary, Alberta.76

  • 31 ii. Anne Sinclair Lonie McKinlay was born circa 1918.19 She died on 30 August 1957 in Calgary, Alberta.19,77 She was buried on 4 September 1957 in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Calgary, Alberta.77

    She was ill with multiple sclerosis in 1950.11

18. David Reid Taylor4 McKinlay (James3, Alexander2, Alexander1) was born on 6 December 1890 in Clydebank, Scotland.33,1,78 He married Annie Gallacher in 1913 in Banff, Alberta.33,69 He died on 5 May 1955 in North Vancouver, B.C., at age 64, and was cremated following a service on 9 May 1955 at Vancouver Crematorium.33,79,78

Given a gold nugget by his uncle, Alexander McKinlay, who obtained it while gold mining in Australia. This was one of five nuggets that Alexander gave to his five McKinlay nephews. David had the nugget made into a stag's head stick pin, representative of the clan symbol. The current owner of the nugget is unknown, but family tradition suggests that David's eldest son would have received the nugget.11,36

He immigrated in 1912 to Canada, and was a marine engineer in Burrard Dry Dock, North Vancouver, B.C.33,69,78

Annie Gallacher was born on 11 December 1890 in Partick, Scotland.80,69 She died on 2 December 1969 in North Vancouver, B.C., at age 78.81,80,82,83

David Reid Taylor4 McKinlay and Annie Gallacher had a large family, comprising six daughters and three sons.
